The 100th anniversary of the First World War was commemorated with a special plaque unveiling in Brent Knoll on Saturday (November 10th).

Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge MP James Heappey was invited by the Brent Knoll branch of the Royal British Legion to lead the ceremony.

The plaque has been installed outside the Parish Hall in honour of the 22 villagers who died in WW1 and the dozens of others who gave their lives in the Burnham area.

The MP lowered a Union Jack to unveil the new plaque and said the plaque would be “an ever-lasting memorial to those who gave their lives during the Great War of 100 years ago.”

During the afternoon, a special concert called “100 Years On” was also held in St Michael’s Church.

The event included children from Brent Knoll School reciting an emotional poem called ‘Who are these Men’, written by a 12 year-old girl in 1966. Brent Knoll Guides also took part in the emotional service, pictured below.

Remembrance Day is being marked with solemn events across the Burnham-On-Sea area with ceremonies this weekend.
