Barn fire near Burnham causes thousands of pounds of damage

-

Fire crews from Burnham-On-Sea and Bridgwater tackled a barn blaze late on Saturday evening (September 4th) which caused thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Three fire crews were called to Yearsley Farm in Chapel Road, Pawlett, as pictured here, after a grain dryer burst into flames, damaging equipment and crops.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to bring the blaze under control and damp down the building.

But Shirley Gooding, who runs the farm with her family, told Burnham-On-Sea.com at the scene: “Many tonnes of our grain have been destroyed, along with the grain dryer, so the damage could cost as much as £50,000.”

Shirley, pictured above, added: “We are just grateful that the fire did not spread to the rest of the building or the damage could have been even worse. Thankfully, the fire brigade were very quick to arrive.”

She said the the fire interrupted what should have been a happy family occasion: “We were all together celebrating my son Jake’s 25th birthday when we heard about the fire.”

“We rushed back to the farm to see smoke and flames shooting out of the barn, so it’s been a birthday to remember for the wrong reasons.”
