Burnham-On-Sea RNLI’s new launching vehicle ‘Kays Cart’ arrives

A specialised new ‘Soft Track’ vehicle has been delivered to Burnham-On-Sea RNLI station and volunteer lifeboat crew members were able to use it for the first time during their January Bank Holiday Monday training session.

Our photo shows the tractor towing the Burnham-On-Sea RNLI D class lifeboat out of the town’s RNLI station.

Originally designed for logging operations in swamp land, the modifications asked for by the RNLI bring the total cost to around £65,000.

Extras that include a more powerful engine, additional cooling, large ballast water tank, improved water seals, additional hydraulics and storage make this an extremely sophisticated vehicle.

The pool ‘soft track’ vehicle that the station has been using since the official opening on 15th May 2004 will be serviced and put into operation somewhere else in the UK.

Martin Cox, Burnham-On-Sea RNLI’s Lifeboat Operations Manager said: “This vehicle was purchased after a will bequest from the late Kathleen Cartwright, a Berrow resident, and is named Kay’s Cart in her memory.”
