Residents at a Burnham-On-Sea care home have welcomed some unusual furry guests.

The Towans in Berrow Road organised a visit by several alpacas, which are well known for their gentle nature and therapeutic qualities.

Talking to Burnham-On-Sea.com, the care home’s activity co-ordinator, Jo Boobyer, said: “We were really excited to have a visit from two alpacas. ‘Marmite’ and ‘Alfred’ were so well behaved.”

“They loved having their necks stroked and enjoyed eating some carrots that the residents had grown in the garden.”

“They even had a ride in the lift to see some residents in their room! Residents were keen to learn all about them and asked lots of questions like how long they live, whether they have their coat shorn, and do they like to by themselves or in groups.”

Jo added: “We learnt that alpacas definitely need to be in pairs or groups or they will die of a broken heart.”

“We were amazed to see how calm they were and how good and relaxed they made the residents feel. The visit went down so well we have already booked them to visit again in December and again next year for our summer fete.”

“Anna brought her lovely alpacas to meet our residents – she has 19 and regularly takes them to fetes and homes in the area.”
