Burnham-On-Sea BMX star Liam Phillips in tonight’s Rio quarter finals

-

Burnham-On-Sea BMX cyclist Liam Phillips powered into tonight’s Olympics quarter-finals in Rio last night (Wednesday).

The BMX cyclist – who is a former pupil of Berrow School and Highbridge’s King Alfred School – completed his seeding run on Wednesday evening in a time of 35.095 seconds, putting him in tenth place overall.

Liam tweeted after last night’s event that the seeding run had not gone fully to plan, saying of his bike: “Unintentionally throwing it sideways. No recovering from that. 10th for me and onto tomorrow!”

He progresses into today’s quarter finals when he will race at 5.30pm.

He is being watched closely by many supporters in the Burnham-On-Sea area.

Among them is Burnham’s Mayor, Cllr Michael Clarke, who told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “I was delighted to see Liam is through to the next round and wish him all the best. With all the training he’s done over the years, he deserves to do really well.”

Liam has high hopes of medal success, having become World Champion since the 2012 London Olympics and also become world number one in the sport. The full results of Wednesday’s seeding run are available here.

If he’s successful today, Liam will be heading into the semi-finals on Friday evening, which take place between 5.38pm and 6.46pm, and he will then be aiming for the final, which takes place on Friday at 7.10pm.
