Thousands of residents across the Burnham-On-Sea and Highbridge area face losing the right to vote in upcoming local elections, the district council has warned this week.
Nearly 8,500 households across the area have not returned their annual voting canvass forms, which were sent out in June.
Sedgemoor District Council says that if the forms are not returned, residents will be unable to cast their vote in next May’s County Council Elections and this November’s Police Crime Commissioner Elections.
Chris Facey, Electoral Registration Officer at Sedgemoor District Council, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “A form was sent in late June to each household in the district with the names of those already registered at that property. Even if the details are correct you must still return the form or use the telephone, Internet or text options that are set out.”
She added: “It is really important that people provide us with this information so the Register of Electors can be kept up to date. Returning the forms will mean we don’t have to send staff to visit non-responding households which will ultimately be paid for out of the taxpayer’s purse.”
