Over 20 volunteers took part in a day of scrub clearance and conservation work in Berrow dunes on Sunday (February 26th).
Members of Sedgemoor Conservation Volunteers and Berrow Conservation Group were joined by members of the public at the Berrow Dunes Local Nature Reserve.
The volunteers undertook sea-buckthorn scrub clearance and native shrub planting.
Norman Lees, one of the leaders of Sedgemoor Conservation Volunteers, told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “We were pleased with the turnout on a cold, grey day and successfully cleared a lot of sea-buckthorn.”
Sedgemoor District Council’s Landscape Officer Jannette Burton added: “A lot of scrub was cleared and burned to keep it from spreading across the dunes – a further session is planned later in March.”
Berrow Dunes is recognised as an important area for nature conservation. The local nature reserve, owned and managed by Sedgemoor District Council is included within the Berrow Dunes Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The site supports one of the most diverse floras in Somerset, with at least 270 species of flowering plants being recorded in this area. Bristol University Conservation Group will hold a further session on 19th March.
