Coastguards from Burnham-On-Sea, Weston and Clevedon were called out on Sunday (June 25th) amid concerns for a kayaker reported to be in difficulty in mud next to Brean Down.
The team were tasked just after 3.30pm to investigate the sighting of a ‘stranded kayaker’ in the River Axe estuary, as pictured below.
Burnham Coastguard Officer Dave Welland told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “A member of the public had seen a person in a kayak that appeared stranded in the river just North of Brean Down.”
“Weston Coastguard were tasked as it was their side of Brean Down and Clevedon Coastguard also attended, but as the kayak was in the river they were unable to spot them from the beach.”
“We were tasked to try and get a visual on the kayak from the top of Brean Down which is a great vantage point that overlooks the whole of Weston bay.”
“We quickly spotted the yellow kayak, which was on a lower ridge of mud just above the water line.”
“Some comms were established via the ops room and the kayaker informed them that he was happy to wait for the incoming tide and continue fishing.”
“As this was the case we were stood down by Milford Haven Coastguard Ops Room and returned to station.”
“The member of public who called in the incident did exactly the right thing, the kayak was in a stranded position but in this case he was fine.”
“If you have any doubts about someone or something along the coast, then without delay dial 999 and ask for the Coastguards.”
