Burnham Coastguards and lifeboats called to ‘struggling swimmers’

-

Burnham-On-Sea Coastguards and lifeboats were called out last night (Friday) after a pair of swimmers were reported to be in difficulty in the sea.

There were concerns that two young swimmers had got into difficulty near the Pavilion, prompting a call-out for the town’s Coastguards and RNLI at 8.30pm.

But RNLI spokesman Mike Lang told Burnham-On-Sea.com it turned out to be a false alarm.

“There were concerns for two swimmers believed to in difficulty near the Pavilion, but fortunately it was a false alarm with good intent,” he said.

“Puffin, our D-class lifeboat, launched and the crew carried out a search of the sea without anyone being seen in trouble and no-one was reported to be missing.”

The D class lifeboat was quickly launched, whilst the Atlantic 75 lifeboat, called Staines Whitfield, stood by on Burnham jetty ready to launch if needed.

A Coastguard spokesman told Burnham-On-Sea.com: “The eyewitness was right to call the Coastguard on 999 as soon as there was any suspicion that someone was in trouble. Even if it later turns out to be a false alarm, it’s better to check it out.”
